I am One

Saw his ax between the trees
He took his aim right at my knees
Still I am one.

Hid behind the trees in fright
I stood there frozen through the night
But he was gone.

Did he find another world?
Well I don’t know.
Either way it’s time to cry
They tell me so.

Pull myself between the sticks
The sky was dim, the mud was thick
Still I am one.

Something move inside my hair
I jump three feet, was that him there?
No he is gone.

Find a town to wander there
Without a name.
Watch them throw their marbles down
For one more game.

The town. Mirrors all around.
Windows to the sky. So I shut my eyes.
And in the darkness flow. Into the woods I go.
The night a single time. The town a single mind.

Take a breath to watch the sky
See it open big blue eye
Yeah we are one.

Hang their clothing on the line
Through alleyways the people wind
Into the dawn.

You could ask them where to stay
But they won’t know.
They just came to laugh and play
They’ll tell you so.

Ferris Wheel

The moon a crescent in the sky
The world a carpet down below
He came to place me on the ferris wheel
His face a shadow in the show.

Green. Green.

Pull back the curtain and you’ll find
An empty room that know one knows
Shake your head and climb the ferris wheel
This is the world that you will come to know.

Green. Green.

I thought the flowers they would one day, one day
I thought the leaves and trees would one day call me home.

You take my hand just like a leaf
You show my foot just where to go
You help me climb upon the ferris wheel
You point down at the world below.

Green. Green.

The Wire

Goodbye to Peanut Lily, one of the neighborhood dogs who used to walk with me.
Goodbye to Peanut Lily, one of the neighborhood dogs who used to walk with me.

You held my hand by barbed wire
You covered my mouth trash burned in a fire
The hills rose high
No thrills, no sky

We walked the road through shack and shed
We fed the dogs some whole wheat bread
Likes fleas, like friends
Burdens that bleed, yearnings that end

You cry but all along
I knew that it was wrong
Under my breath I sang a song
I don’t belong, I don’t belong

Good morning dogs scratch at my door
Could I delay for just a moment more?
Cold air, always so gray
Always want more, carried away

Goodbye, Cotton. We will miss you.
Goodbye, Cotton. We will miss you.

You place the slippers on my feet
We watch the kids play on the street
Let’s try to have faith, let’s try to have fun
Look the kid in the stripes, he’s wearing a gun

You cry but all along
I knew that it was wrong
Under my breath I sang a song
I don’t belong, I don’t belong

I set a rock upon a log
I watched the trees dissolving into fog
Forced to remain, forced to hang on
Always the same, just expanded upon

You cry but all along
I knew that it was wrong
Under my breath I sang a song
I don’t belong, I don’t belong.
