Longfingers

Grabbing at fish with his hands,
Longfingers slips and slides beneath
the water wearing painted on clothes
of water and sunshine and mud.

Three green fish slip through his fingers
and squiggle desperately towards the shores
of Indiana where nobody like Longfingers
exists.

Tonight they will sleep well, cuddled
together in the sentimental, lavender
cloud of their dreams.

So will you sleep well, tucked
into bed with your wife, and your life,
and all of those pieces and facets of life

never dreaming of Longfingers, never
needing to, for what could Longfingers
really offer you, but the chance to swim
across the Ohio and be pulled like a fish,
breathlessly, from the river of your dreams.
